Crown Cork & Seal Works on Self-Chilling Can. Crown Cork and Seal weighs production of self-chilling beverage can. Crown executive says can will be same size as standard 12-oz can and would run on normal filling line, but hold less liquid to accommodate chilling unit (illustration - click on picture for full-size version). Crown aims at can holding 300 ml or about 10 ounces, says Crown executive vp corporate technology Dan Abramowicz. Can uses no refrigerant, discharges no gas and is recyclable, Abramowicz says. Explains chilling process uses heat-pump technology. Notes, "water is bound in a gel. When water is released, it evaporates and chills beverage." Adds can is able to chill beverage by 30 degrees in three minutes. Inventor is Tempra Technology of Bradenton, Florida. Crown would do production under exclusive license.
Cost/use. Can will cost "significantly more" than regular cans. Crown anticipates use by consumers in specialty situations like picnics and hiking. Potential seen for CSD, non-carbs and beer. Prospects. Abramowicz says Crown works with major customers who have shown initial interest. Other executive says new can could be in market in two years. Illustration is copyright Crown Cork and Seal. Hot stuff. Crown-Tempra technology also capable of heating can's contents by "reversing" the cooling process. Possible uses seen for heating soup/snacks; also in Japan where vendors now sell hot coffee/tea. [ Return to 4/14/00 Headlines ]
