Pepsi and Coke Plan Fountain Innovations.

Pepsi tests "Flavor Splash" for fountain soft drinks. Consumers buy 0.9-ounce plastic packets of flavor additive when they buy fountain beverages. Contents of packets are mixed with fountain-dispensed CSD (photo). Flavors: citrus-orange, cherry, berry. Packets illustrated with likeness of Pepsi Swirl bottle; word "Pepsi" not highlighted. Package content 15 calories. Consumers buy flavor packets for 39-49¢ each.

Tests. Pepsi executive says flavors are suitable to be added to Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mt. Dew, etc. Pepsi recently completes tests with 7-Eleven in Tampa/Las Vegas and Taco Bell in Los Angeles/Detroit. Plans additional tests this year. Pepsi also continues rollout of Twist 'N Go proprietary fountain cup designed to evoke look of Swirl bottle (BD 10/8/99).

Coke. Company tests new shaped plastic fountain cup designed to utilize company's icons. Cup looks like traditional Coke drinking glass which is similar in shape to inverted bell. Cup also incorporates vertical flutes similar to contour bottle. Now in test at Krystal's hamburger chain in southeast plus others. Available in colorless and green clear plastic; 32- and 44-ounces. Plastic cup is embossed with "Coca-Cola." Lid contains markings for different beverages -- Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite -- using beverage's actual trademark image to indicate beverage contained.
