Coke is set to start selling small packets of flavored syrup for fountain drinks. One early customer is Wal-Mart. Product will be sold to consumers who buy fountain drinks. "Flavor Rage" syrup will be sweetened with sucralose and have no calories. Top version in photo called "Flava Shot" for Sprite; final version of product will be called "Flavor Rage." Around Sprite logo are words, "add a shot of flavor." Three versions pictured. Source says company also plans "Remix" flavor additive. "Vanilla" and "Cherry" packets in red, presumably for Coke's cola products. Each packet contains 1.25 ounces.
Price/timing. Coke said to suggest pricing of about 29¢ per packet. Flavor Rage will be in-market around Memorial Day.
Perspective. As new/flavored products have proliferated, number of fountain spigots has not. Accordingly, this device allows Coke to sell variety of flavored CSDs at fountain, without sacrificing spigot space occupied by its core brands.
Pepsi. In 2000, Pepsi tested similar product called, "Flavor Splash." Small plastic packets were in shape of and designed to evoke Pepsi's Swirl bottle. Flavors were orange, cherry and berry. Product not currently in market.
