Former PepsiCo CEO Wayne Calloway Dies.
Industry Executives Praise His Leadership.

Wayne Calloway -- chairman/CEO of PepsiCo 1986-96 -- dies July 8 at age 62. Over last several years, Calloway undergoes treatment for prostate cancer following 1992 surgery. In letter to Pepsi bottlers, current PepsiCo chairman/CEO Roger Enrico calls Calloway "business leader of enormous intelligence and integrity who guided PepsiCo to great growth and prosperity." Enrico says Calloway was "as warm and genuine a man as you could know." Adds: "I'll miss Wayne's friendship and wisdom."

Career. Calloway's career at PepsiCo spanned 31 years. Highlights include seven years as president/CEO of Frito-Lay. After Frito-Lay, he became executive vp and CFO and then president of PepsiCo. Calloway served as chairman of the board of alma mater, Wake Forest University. In 1995, Wake Forest named business school in Calloway's honor. At time of death, Calloway served on boards of PepsiCo, Exxon, Citicorp and General Electric.

Calloway. Industry leaders refer to Calloway as self-effacing and without pretense. In 1992, Calloway speaks at BD's December "Future Smarts" conference in New York City. Tells attendees: "On the way here just a few minutes ago, I bought a genuine Cartier gold and diamond wristwatch for $11. I think the average citizen would have missed this kind of bargain, but we CEOs are pretty sharp. I bought it from this guy with a suitcase on the corner ... He certainly didn't have an MBA. I really felt a little bad about taking advantage of him like that. And the watch is great, even though it wasn't actually working. He said the really fine watches take a few days to warm up."

Industry leaders. Top industry executives offer views, recollections of Calloway: Craig Weatherup, CEO Pepsi-Cola: "Wayne Calloway had tremendous inspirational quality and for the past 25 years, I personally benefited from his capacity to inspire and motivate." Adds: "Every one of us at PepsiCo will miss Wayne's wisdom and counsel, but even more, his friendship." John Sunderland, CEO Cadbury Schweppes: "Wayne Calloway was a true leader, both in his company and in the industry at large. In addition, he was genuinely a caring and thoughtful person. He will be sorely missed." Don Keough, former president Coca-Cola Co: "I knew him well. He was a fierce competitor, a great industry leader and a true and noble gentleman. He served both the industry and his stakeholders well." Nelson Peltz, chairman/CEO Triarc: "Wayne was one of our industry's great pioneers, and he will surely be missed."

Plus. Chris Sinclair, former CEO Pepsi-Cola, known to have been close to Calloway: "Wayne embodied the best characteristics of PepsiCo. He had a passionate belief in growth and high standards and a passionate belief in developing and nurturing good people." Phil Dusenberry, chairman BBDO NY: "Someone once asked Wayne what his job at Pepsi was. He said it was, 'to keep the eagles flying in formation.' He spotted talent, found good people and let them flourish. He empowered them to be their best." Adds: "He was self-effacing and unassuming. He didn't have pretenses. People could relate to him." Manny Goldman, PaineWebber: "First and foremost, Wayne was a real gentleman, a first class person. Second, Wayne Calloway may be the person most responsible for Frito-Lay being the powerhouse that it is today." Jimmy Lee, CEO Pepsi Buffalo Rock: "Wayne was a great no-nonsense guy. He was a great friend. He was always interested in bottlers and was approachable when we needed to reach him." Bill Brown, CEO Pepsi Brown Jackson MS: "He was one of the best guys ... There's no telling how many people at PepsiCo he's influenced, people who have made it up the ranks."
