Canadian Consumption: CSD #1.
But Trends Differ From US and Europe.

Canadians on average consume just over half as much carbonated soft drinks in 1997 as US residents but more than twice as many as Europeans. Canadian per capita consumption of coffee, milk and juices greater than either US or Europe.

Table. Compares per capita consumption -- in 8-oz servings -- of all major beverage categories plus "all other" which is mostly tap water. Data sources: Canada from Canadian Soft Drink Association (CSDA) and industry executives; US from BD/Maxwell; Europe from Canadean. European data includes 34 eastern/western countries.

Comparisons. 1) in both Canada and US, CSD is top packaged beverage. Milk leads in Europe data. 2) coffee #2 in Canada, tea #2 in Europe, beer #2 in US. 3) juice per capita consumption in Canada more than twice Europe, substantially higher than US. 4) bottled water consumption in US and Europe more than twice Canada. 5) European wine consumption triple US and Canada. 6) US residents drink substantially more CSD and substantially less tap water than Canadians or Europeans. Perspective. CSDA president Paulette Vinette notes Canadian soft drink market is "under-developed" compared to US (BD 7/2/98).
