and Brands. Total US 1998 carbonated soft drink volume grows +3% to 9.88 bil 192-oz cases, according to Beverage Digest/Maxwell all-channel data. Overall growth rate in 1998 is lower than industry's +3.2% growth in 1997 (BD 2/12/98) and +3.6% in 1996 (BD 2/7/97). Coke and Pepsi each post +4.5% corporate volume growth and both gain share. Coke's share up +0.6 points; Pepsi up +0.5. Coke's overall volume in US grows +190.9 mil cases; Pepsi +134.5 mil cases. Among top-10 companies, Coke and Pepsi capture all share growth. Cadbury's Dr Pepper/Seven Up unit (DPSU) increases overall volume +2.3%, but loses share. Plus. In brand landmark, Coke Classic's volume passes 2 bil cases. Brands. Coke's Minute Maid breaks into top-10 brands with +29.8% volume growth. Minute Maid dislodges Caffeine-Free Diet Pepsi, which was #10 brand last year. Dollars. For 1998, BD estimates retail value of CSD industry in US was $56.3 bil, up +2.9% from 1997. Unlike 1997, when retail value growth rate was less than half industry volume growth rate, retail dollars grew almost in line with volume in 1998. This indicates more stable pricing and volume shifting into higher-margin channels. |
