Refrigerated Juices: Tropicana Holds Big
Lead Pepsi's Tropicana leads refrigerated juices/juice drinks category and gains share in latest quarter. Coke's Minute Maid posts healthy share gain, mostly from new line of blended juices. Several smaller brands post share gains while three of top-five flat or down.

Each listed brand includes one or more separate juice products (i.e., 100% orange juice, 100% grapefruit juice, blended 100% juices, juice drinks, etc). Data covers refrigerated 100% juice and juice drink products in $2+ mil supermarkets. Data does not include cold-fill juice drinks in CSD packaging or shelf-stable "juice aisle" products. Tropicana and Dole owned by PepsiCo but covered separately in data. Category. Refrigerated juice volume totals 174.9 mil 192-oz cases during 13 weeks ending Sept. 18. Volume up +1.8% vs comparable period in 1998. Among top individual juices/juice drinks, biggest volume gains posted by Tropicana's 100% orange juice (up +8%); Minute Maid fruit drinks (up +6.3%); Dole non-pineapple fruit juice (up +9.6%) and Tropicana 100% grapefruit juice (up +19.5%). Welch's enters refrigerated juice category in last 18 months and leaps to #7 rank. Sunny Delight. This data covers segment of P&G's juice drink product in refrigerated format. Sunny Delight also sold in cold-fill, shelf-stable version in soft drink packages, produced and distributed by CSD bottlers. Juice industry executive says in 13-week period, volume of Sunny Delight in soft drink packaging totals 2.2 mil cases in supermarkets vs 18.6 mil cases for refrigerated version. Volume of Sunny Delight CSD-type product down -15.8%; volume flat for refrigerated product.
