Molson Coors, Coca-Cola’s production and distribution partner for Topo Chico Hard Seltzer, provided an early look at sales for the brand that launched March 29 in select markets. The brand grabbed a 3.2 share of hard seltzer category sales in its first week. In Texas, where Topo Chico non-alcoholic sparkling water enjoys a large following, the hard seltzer version took almost a 20 share in the first week. Those shares were likely driven in large part by floor displays and promotions designed to drive trial. At a Kroger in Atlanta where the brand was launched, BD spotted the product (pictured below) behind a cooler door in the hard seltzer set, at eye level on an ambient end cap display in the beer aisle, and in a floor stack with Blue Moon and other Molson Coors brands in the meat department adjacent to an ambient craft beer display. “We are encouraged by the early results,” Coke CEO James Quincey said during an earnings conference call with analysts yesterday. “But it’s all going to come down to repeat, and nothing’s worth anything without repeat.” Molson Coors is encouraged enough for now that the company is developing a Topo Chico Ranch Water inspired by the tequila, Topo Chico and lime cocktail popular at bars in Texas.
